During an interview with Essence, Missy Elliott addressed the secret to being successful in the music business by saying “Be yourself.”
Born Melissa Arnette Elliott, the now the 51-year-old believes the key to longevity in music is being genuine, adding that as a child, her grandmother, who has since passed away, stressed the importance of being humble, no matter your successes.
The legendary rapper stated:
“I’ll always tell people that relationships, especially in this business, are more important than a check.” “As long as you have great relationships, you will always get a check, because people won’t mind helping you when you are down and out. I want people to know me for good music, but just being a good person, that is important.”
In addition to her upbringing, the multi-Grammy award winning musician confirmed that she’s currently working on new music, stating “I got some new stuff in the works,” and teasing that it would be “fun” and “upbeat”.
Currently close-lipped about many of the details, the iconic artist said, “I never tell dates… ‘Cause when I tell you dates, it will get you in trouble with them fans.”
Following her Iconology EP in 2019, Missy’s last full length, The Cookbook, was released in 2005,
