In preparation for Valentine’s Day, Saweetie‘s new video features the superstar rapper flying around the world to visit each of her boyfriends.
The Disco-energized single features the vocals styling of H.E.R. (born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson), along with Saweetie (born Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper) who raps “I wanna fall in love for the weekend/Three boyfriends, IDK where I’m sleeping,” “We be thuggin’, clubbin’, fuckin’/Order room service when we done that’s the sequence.”
Unafraid of flaunting her litany of male suitors, in the Hannah Lux Davis-directed video, H.E.R. is the co-pilot when Saweetie stops in Paris where she’s pampered by boyfriend #1, followed by male counterpart #2 heads in Tokyo where she and her friends are treated to some sushi and a luxury car and then to The Philippines, where she plays tennis with her “baby zaddy.”
The kitchy yet catchy lyric comes when Saweetie’s raps: “Icy muah, ooh lala!” (Is this the new “Is that my bestie in a Tessie?”) interspersed with H.E.R.’s pop-perfect sensual chorus “Hold me closer/It’s the freak in me, I wanna show ya/It feels so good don’t want it to be over.”
‘Closer’ marks the first time H.E.R. and Saweetie (both of Filipina and Black descent) have collaborated. The track is the rapper’s first single of 2021, following “Icy Chain” from late-2021 and her duet with Tai’Aysha, “One Night Ting,” last month.
Set to release her album Pretty Bitch Music later this year, both women are nominated for several Grammy Awards; Saweetie for Best New Artist and Best Rap Song for “Best Friend” with Doja Cat and H.E.R. is up for eight awards, including Album of the Year for Back of My Mind.
