What will mark her first live performance at the show in more than two decades, Madonna is slated to open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards awards.
Leading this years awards nominations with 11 – including Video of the Year for Confessions II – The Film, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for ‘Bring Your Love’ – the iconic singer/songwriter, is riding high on the release of her latest album, Confessions II, which debuted at #1 in July on America’s Billboard 200.
Having last performed at the VMAs alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera for the 2003 opener, the musician (born Madonna Louise Ciccone) has enjoyed a protracted history with the VMAs, including her ‘Like a Virgin’ performance during the inaugural 1984 broadcast that remains a moment in pop culture history. Her other VMA performances include ‘Bye Bye Baby’ in 1993, ‘Express Yourself’ in 1989, and ‘Vogue’ in 1990.
In addition to Madonna, Taylor Swift has garnered nine nods, followed by Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, with seven apiece. Nirvana will be honured with the Video Vanguard Award.
Staged at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on September 27, Snoop Dogg will emcee the awards ceremony.
Celebrating the year’s best music videos and pop culture moments, the VMAs are an annual award show hosted by MTV with additional performers, presenters and special guests to be revealed in the coming week.
