Participating in an all-female mission, Katy Perry and Gayle King are scheduled to fly into outer space this spring.
On Thursday (2.27,) it was announced that the musician and broadcast journalist will take part in an all-female crew that will fly into space on a Blue Origin space tourism rocket owned by tech billionaire Jeff Bezos.
In addition to Perry and King, the crew will also include Bezos’ journalist and licensed pilot fiancée Lauren Sánchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe and research scientist Amanda Nguyen.
In a formal statement about the upcoming flight, Blue Origin said, “(Sánchez) is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”
The very first all-female flight crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s spaceflight in 1963, the forthcoming mission was revealed on the CBS Mornings television show.
Separating the Earth’s atmosphere from space, the jaunt will see the superstar songstress and the five other crew members cross the Kármán line, 62 miles above the Earth’s surface.
Before parachuting down 15 minutes after take off, the pilot-less rocket will launch the capsule containing the women into space for several minutes of weightlessness.
The first ever American flight of its kind is scheduled to take place this spring from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One near Van Horn in the West Texas desert, and it will also make King the second network morning show host to travel to space aboard a Blue Origin rocket, following Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan, who was a crew member in December 2021.
