In order to make way for a presidential election debate, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards have been delayed.
Originally scheduled for September 10 in New York, this years VMAs will now take place a day later.
To avoid any conflict with the upcoming televised debate between 2024 US presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, on Monday (8.12) MTV issued a press release stating “Our fans are encouraged to tune in for the 9/10 debate ahead of music’s most iconic night.”
Because music and entertainment network has forever encouraged younger voters to go out and cast their ballots on election day, any attention-diverting award show that could conflict with the first confirmed Trump/Harris debate could be construed as counterproductive.
Marking the first time the two candidates will face off and make their pitch to the American public, public Interest in the proposed presidential debate is extremely high.
During his June 2024 debate with Trump, incumbent president Joe Biden struggled to form coherent sentences that resulted in him later withdrawing from the election race, with Harris subsequently confirmed as the 2024 nominee.
On Monday MTV confirmed that the initial list of official performers of the 2024 VMAs ceremony will include Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla and Rauw Alejandro.
Per usual, Taylor Swift is the star to beat as she leads the nominations board with 10 nods – including artist of the year, song of the year, best collaboration, and best pop.
