This Sunday’s Oscar Awards show will look a bit different than in the past, seeing that the pool of content from which to pull was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The category of best original song is especially interesting, given the way the pandemic forced the postponement of so many blockbusters: Viewers didn’t get a Frozen-style animated musical to lock down one of the spots by default (and Christina Aguilera’s new song from the live-action Mulan remake didn’t make the cut), while Billie Eilish’s James Bond theme might have been the frontrunner had No Time to Die actually come out as planned.
What’s left in the absence of those films are somber closing-credits dirges reflecting the themes of dramas about the pursuit of social justice – highlighted by the unrest seen throughout 2020. Watch some of those clips of nominated songs below, and tune in to the Oscar Awards this Sunday at 7 PM Central.
