The Chainsmokers Hit Rare Achievement With ‘Closer’

The Chainsmokers‘ “Closer” has been inescapable ever since its release in 2016, and due to its success the song has reached a milestone that few have achieved as the Columbia Records-release has been certified platinum by the RIAA.

Between pure track purchases and streaming equivalents the New York-based duo have sold an equivalent of 12 million units in the U.S. alone. Only Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”, Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” and Justin Bieber and Ludacris’ “Baby” have been certified 12-times platinum. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” is the only track to go beyond, claiming 13-times platinum.
