Four since Prince passed away prematurely in 2016, pieces of his musical collection have been hard to come by, and when they do surface, they sell for a significant price. And in a recent auction, the Minnesota native’s iconic blindingly blue guitar became available.
The “Blue Angel” Cloud 2 electric guitar that was used by the “Purple Rain” artist in the 1980s and 1990s, starting with the 1984 Purple Rain Tour through his classic albums Lovesexy and Sign O’ The Times albums, skyrocketed well beyond the estimated $100,000 to $200,000 it was expected to fetch at the Music Icons Julien’s Auctions on Friday (June 19th) and Saturday in Beverly Hills. What was formerly thought to be a lost piece of Prince memorabilia equipment eventually nabbed a staggering $563,500.
At the same auction, a macrame belt that Elvis Presley wore about 30 times on stage brought in nearly ten times its expected price, with a final bid of $298,000. An ivory gown worn by Madonna in her 1990 “Vogue” video sold for $179,200. And finally, Kurt Cobain’s famous acoustic-electric guitar that was used on the unforgettable MTV Unplugged performance also reeled in a staggering $6,000,010. See it and the new owner below.
