Due to current pandemic-related safety precautions, this year’s MTV Video Music Awards took on a different look but the artist performances by the likes BTS, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande were nothing short of extraordinary!
Conducted on select sound stages and venues throughout New York City and Los Angeles, particular highlights included The Weeknd who put on a dazzling display of his mega-hit “Blinding Lights,” BTS exhibited their 24-hour record-breaking “Dynamite” and Lady Gaga showed off “Chromatica II”, “Rain On Me” with Ariana Grande and more. Some of same artists who were chosen to perform also took home moon man trophies, including Gaga, who was presented with the Tricon award, among others, celebrating her triple-threat status and groundbreaking career. Doja Cat, The Weeknd, BTS and Megan Thee Stallion won the PUSH artist of the year, Video of the Year, Best Pop, and Best Hip-Hop award, respectively.
Last night’s VMAs were dedicated to the recently deceased Chadwick Boseman, who passed away premature on Friday night. As the show began, host Keke Palmer offered a brief video message in honor of the actor: “Before we get into the music tonight, we need to talk about the devastating loss of Chadwick Boseman, an actor whose talent and passion is a true inspiration to all the fans he touched and everyone he encountered.” Others spoke on the subject, noting their experiences with the Black Panther star, adding extra gravity to the night.
