Adding to an already busy October, including the launch of his signature Crocs footgear and featured cover story in Vogue Italia with his wife, Justin Bieber just released a telling and emotional track, “Lonely.”
As the Interscope Records-released song’s name suggests, the 26-year old superstar takes a look inward at the struggles he faced growing up in the music industry. A decade after his debut single, the “Baby” sings, “What if you had it all but nobody to call? Maybe then you’d know me. ‘Cause I’ve heard everything, but no one’s listening, and that’s just f - - king lonely.”
The melancholy track’s video features Bieber’s signature vocal sound over a minimal piano accompaniment and stars 14-year-old Jacob Tremblay as a young Justin, struggling with success and isolation. Harkening back to his early days in music, the clip starts with a shot of Jacob alone, staring at his reflection in a huge dressing room mirror, before being summoned to slowly make his way to the stage. “I’m so lonely,” the young star mouths, along with Bieber, as the camera pans out to reveal a single person sitting and watching.
On Twitter, the Canadian superstar admitted that it’s difficult to rewatch the video for the Benny Blanco-produced track. “To be honest the song is hard for me to listen to considering how tough it was to get through some of these chapters. I believe it is powerful to express vulnerability and that’s why I believe this song is so powerful.”
