Since its release, Julia Michaels and JP Saxe’s “If the World Was Ending” has performed beautifully as a stand alone single, until it took on a whole new meaning since the advent of Covid-19. And with the world united by music during these challenging times, the duo decided to create a star-studded edition of the song.
Sam Smith, H.E.R., Alessia Cara, Niall Horan, Keith Urban, Finneas (the song’s producer) and more are among the long list of esteemed names who sing along with Saxe and Michaels’ duet. In an almost “We Are The World 2020”-esque fashion, each artist filmed their part on their cell phones from homes while self-isolating. Stitched together brilliantly, the clips play to each singer’s strengths, including Lindsey Stirling accompanying the piece on violin. Though the original composition was extremely emotional, this new edition brings the song to a whole new level. Check it out here.
All proceeds from the massive collaboration will benefit Doctors Without Borders, with a special message at the end of the clip from a participating doctor about the impact of COVID-19 on countries where many of the doctors are stationed. “We are so grateful for the incredible work being done by those on the front lines during this global pandemic,” Saxe and Michaels said in a joint statement. “At a time when it can sometimes feel like ‘the world is ending,’ we thank all of the healthcare workers, first responders, and essential workers who are helping so many people in need. Please stay home, stay safe (and don’t actually go over!)”
