In honor of this years for Mother’s Day a number of TV shows and artists did special edition addresses, performances and more this weekend, and none hit closer to home than Boyz II Men linking up with Babyface for a rendition of “A Song For Mama” on SNL.
With Saturday Night Live wrapping up their “At Home” series of socially-distanced shows, the rendition was fitting for the date and served as an appropriate send-off for the short-lived run of virtual broadcasts. “On behalf of SNL, we’d like to send a very special Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers that can’t be with their children this year, and all the mothers that we’ve lost,” the show’s Michael Che said prior to the performance. “We love you, we miss you, and thank you.”
Each from the own homes, the legendary Motown soul trio was accompanied on guitar by the 1997 track’s producer ensconced amongst platinum plaques that lined his walls. During the song, numerous photos of SNL cast members with their respective mothers were shown on screen. Watch the video below.
Saturday’s showing was the third and final installment of SNL At Home, which, throughout its short run, saw Coldplay’s Chris Martin covering Bob Dylan, and Miley Cyrus performing Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” The episode also marked the end of SNL’s 45th season.
