The Black Eyed Peas took to the The Late Late Show stage this week to perform the hypnotic opening track from their Interscope Records-released Masters of the Sun Vol. 1, “Back 2 Hiphop.” The lyrics of the new song describe the trio’s return to their original late 90s conscious rap sound after a mid-2000s trip into the pop realm with longtime singer Fergie.
“Back 2 Hiphop” opened with the group – dressed in all black – standing in front of a light-surrounded triangle. Electrified horns soon blared, summoning a groovy, reggae-like beat. will.i.am took the first verse, reciting, “Ring the alarm, get on the horn and inform/ Everyone from Oregon to Melbourne/ That the funk phenomenon has been reborn and transformed,” thus setting the tone for the whole set.
Vocalist and former The Voice of the Philippines contestant Jessica Reynoso then slowed down the jiving to take on a smooth chorus, repeating “back to life, back to life,” in her velvety voice while the rest of the team interjected hyped-up ad-libs.
