Billie Eilish knows all too well about unrequited love and she makes it known in her newest track “Wish You Were Gay.”
On the track, the “Ocean Eyes” artist counts all the ways that a boy she likes won’t reciprocate her feelings, hopefully concluding that his lack of interest is towards her entire gender, not just her specifically. “I can’t tell you how much I wish I didn’t wanna stay,” she sings softly over a softly-plucked guitar, “I just kinda wish you were gay.” The song eventually blossoms into a more complete piece, featuring percussion, claps and the Los Angeles native’s signature chorused vocals.
In a video released alongside the Interscope Records project, Eilish explained that the playful title and concept for the track was meant as a coping mechanism for her, not as an indictment of the other person. “I wish you were gay to spare my pride,” she said of the song’s lyrics. “To give your lack of interest in me an explanation.”
As a part of her campaign for the single, Eilish also announced via press release that for the next 24 hours, a portion of all proceeds from her BLOHSH apparel line will be donated to The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide and crisis prevention program for at-risk LGBTQ youth.
