Kiesza blew onto the music scene in 2014 with her dance-ready hit “Hideaway” and follow-up full length, Sound of a Woman. But she seemed to have disappeared with many wondering where she’s been and fans may now have an answer.
In a 2017 interview, the Canadian singer/songwriter explained that she’d lost a close friend to cancer in 2015 – prompting her to take time off. Six months later, Kiesza was involved in a near-fatal car accident in Toronto that left her with a traumatic brain injury, putting her career as an artist in question.
Two years later, the now 30-year-old occasionally still faces incapacitating fatigue, memory loss and vision issues but she’s stopped seeing her physical setbacks as actual deficits. “My brain injury has been my biggest pathway to growth,” Kiesza, who was born Kiesa Rae Ellestad, told Billboard. “I’m really opening up parts of myself that were shut before.” In June, she delivered the echoing “Sweet Love,” which wasn’t a huge departure from the dance-driven sound of her 2014 debut album, but definitely isn’t the last fans will hear from her as the artist admits she has plenty of “darker” music in her arsenal to come in the future.
