Currently available on Google Play, Amazon Prime and YouTube video on demand services, The High Note stars Tracee Ellis Ross as fictional diva, Gracie Davis alongside Ice Cube who serves as her manager, Jack.
Ellis portrays a superstar singer who can still sell out venues, but becomes increasingly reliant on her old hits to grab airtime. While many might expect the daughter of iconic songstress, Diana Ross, to take pointers from her legendary musical mother, this story is all hers. In a recent interview, the California native noted that “It was a story that I felt really strongly about telling. This script came along and I chased it…. The script had nothing to do with my mom … It was wonderfully written. It was all on the page and there wasn’t far that I had to look [for inspiration].”
Rounding out the films star power is Ice Cube who plays a much different role than his stereotypic bad boy image as he directs Grace’s career back to relevance, and even lays into her assistant, Maggie, for blowing a session with a self-absorbed producer played by world-renowned DJ/producer Diplo.
The film has thus far received mixed reviews, given its fitting Devil Wears Prada-type romantic comedy genre and have a look-see at the movie trailer below.
