Just in time for Halloween, Michael Jackson’s iconic “Thriller” resurrects itself onto Billboard‘s Dance Club Songs chart. The highly anticipated re-issue remixed by Steve Aoki jumps over the Breakout section in favor of this week’s No. 49 debut (dated Nov. 4).
Dubbed the “Midnight Hour Remix” Aoki transforms the ’82 cult classic into a climatic festival banger. The Grammy Award nominated DJ/producer adds head nodding snaps, swelling atmospheric pads and scintillating melodies to the mix for a pouncing progressive remake.
“Working on this remix was absolutely one of the most memorable experiences in my life. The careful balance of maintaining the integrity of the stems and samples with the concept of remixing it and Aokifying it so I can bring it a new lease of life in my sets and in our culture was delicate but I got there. I am extremely proud of this new remix and I hope everyone can follow that same feeling I had making it,” he wrote on Instagram.
Aoki’s “Midnight Hour Remix” appears on Michael Jackson’s new Scream compilation. The 13-track compilation released via Epic/Legacy Recordings in collaboration with The Estate of Jackson, features classic cuts such as “Ghosts”, “Torture”, “Thriller” and “Dirty Diana” as well.
The Halloween-inspired tracklist “reflects The King of Pop’s affection for this time of the year,” according to a press release from Epic, “and its themes of costumes and disguise, darkness and light, character transformations and surprise. It’s the perfect soundtrack for Halloween/October parties.”
