The Weeknd has taken 2020 by storm courtesy of a new album, merchandise, music videos, and now an exclusive TikTok concert. On August 7th, the Grammy winner gifted fans with a snippet of a brand new song during “The Weeknd Experience,” an augmented reality, interactive livestream.

Joining the ranks of many other artists who’ve performed online over the past few months, The Weeknd’s record label XO, along with Republic Records and WAVE, Scooter Braun’s virtual concert start-up, joined forces in hopes of giving viewers a truly unique show. The 20-minute performance featured state-of-the-art three-dimensional visuals and several interactive components, allowing an audience of over 230,000 to create their own realities and outcomes.

Born Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd appeared via the app in avatar form, sporting the oversized glasses and red jacket that have become synonymous with the After Hours project. He treated fans to multiple tracks throughout his 20-minute set, including a very special 30-second snippet of an untitled new song, reminiscent of his earlier, more stripped-down projects. In general, the exhibition was exciting with some claiming the TikTok app crashed due to countless fan interactions.
