In association with Mental Health Awareness Day on October 10th Spotify collected important data on playlists that were aimed at soothing the mind and what they found was interesting yet somewhat predictable.

Playlists related to mental health keywords such as “mindfulness,” “calm,” and “self-care” saw streaming increases of 57% over the last year. As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing lockdowns and quarantines have had widespread effects on peoples’ overall well being, streaming music has become one of the biggest go-to outlets as auditory comfort food with listeners finding ways to calm themselves during these trying time.

2020 has also seen a rise in podcasts dedicated to self-care and self-help and with people trying to pick up a new skill or hobby, or improve themselves in some way Spotify reports that streams of this kind have increased by 122%.

Spotify hosts its own mental health initiative called Heart & Soul and as World Mental Health Day passes, it’s more important than ever to focus on one’s emotional state, and take care of those around us.
