Pharrell Williams premiered new original music that will appear on the Hidden Figures soundtrack. Joined by a full band and choir, Williams debuted new music from the film’s soundtrack that he wrote, produced, and recorded himself. During his concert, he dedicated one of the songs to one of the actors Taraji P. Henson and sang “Happy Birthday” to her.
Just prior to the performance, he partook in a Q&A session about the film along with its three leading actors. Joined by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe, Williams acted as mediator and host of the session. The entire thing was conducted in real time for a Facebook Live interview at the Toronto International Film Festival. During that time, Spencer expressed her belief that mothers everywhere should encourage their daughters in furthering their education.
“Hopefully this movie will be a call to action for moms to foster the inquisitive mind like Katherine Johnson (the mathematician Henson portrays)” says Spencer. “And to nurture that within our young girls. I’m excited that people are going to get this.”
As the film’s title suggests, Hidden Figures is about three women who played crucial roles with NASA in their early launch days despite being relatively unrecognized. The three actors portray the a physicist, a space scientist, and a mathematician who worked closely on Project Mercury and Apollo 11 mission to the moon. During the Q&A, Taraji, Octavia, Spencer, Monáe and Williams discuss the importance of telling the story.
Towards the end of the video, Pharrell finished the Q&A by empowering young girls everywhere to recognize their own potential inside.
“I also want all the young girls, regardless to what color you are, I want you to see this film and recognize that not only can you do it, but it’s actually already been done.”
