From his work in creating his own music to his inspiring position at NYU’s Clive Davis program, Pharrell Williams has worn many hats. Though his newest endeavor, a musical film, will be his biggest project yet. Atlantis, which was recently picked up by Fox, will tell a Romeo-and-Juliet-style story set in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where the multi Grammy Award winning producer grew up.
In addition to the Romeo-and-Juliet theme, the film may potentially explore Pharrell’s collaboration with Neptunes partner Chad Hugo as well as future N.E.R.D. collaborator Shay Haley.
The project will be produced by Gil Netter and Pharrell. Michael Mayer, who had success on Broadway with Spring Awakening and Green Day’s American Idiot musical has signed on to direct. Martin Hynes, the screenwriter behind Toy Story 4, will write the film.
Pharrell made his first major foray into film production with last year’s Hidden Figures, which earned three Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. The former Voice coach also wrote original songs for the film.
