Kinky Boots welcomed Grammy Award-winning Pentatonix singer Kirstin Maldonado to the cast of Cyndi Lauper’s Tony-winning musical. She joined Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, who plays the role of a down-on-his-luck shoe factory named owner Charlie Price.
Maldonado made her Broadway debut at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Friday, February 2, succeeding Delaney Westfall in the role of Lauren. She will remain with the production through April 8.
The Pentatonix member released she her debut single “Break a Little” last May, the dancefloor-ready track appeared on her L O V E EP on RCA Records. Maldonado has won three Grammy Awards with the a cappella group Pentatonix, which rose to fame as the winners of NBC’s The Sing Off in 2011 and became an online phenomenon, reaching 13 million YouTube subscribers and over 2 billion YouTube views
“Coming out of a group, it’s always really fun and creative to do your own thing,” she told Playbill. “I was a musical theatre major in college, so that was my goal to move here. Then Pentatonix happened, so that was amazing. I’ve dreamed of being on Broadway since I was a little girl, so it’s really exciting to fulfill two dreams. I think the most fulfilling thing you can do in an artistic career is to do all these different things. I’m so eager and excited to add all this to my rep.”
Based on the 2005 film, Kinky Boots follows Charlie (Shears), who tries to save his recently deceased father’s shoe factory from bankruptcy by manufacturing shoes for drag queens. The musical features a score by Grammy Award-winning pop star Lauper and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. Jerry Mitchell directs and choreographs.
