N.E.R.D. has finally returned after a seven year hiatus to present the album, No_One Ever Really Dies.
Featuring tracks like “Lemon” featuring Rihanna and “1000” with Future, the full release also includes contributions from Gucci Mane, Kendrick Lamar, M.I.A., Andre 3000 and Ed Sheeran. It is unclear though, with all these collaborations, how much Chad Hugo and Shay Haley actually contributed.
When interviewed by The Guardian, the trio discussed some of the political aims of the new album, with Pharrell saying “If not now, when? If not me, who?” The “Happy” singer ratcheted it up to say “I don’t know if you’ve seen the news or who’s running my country but it’s a real fucking shit show… I’ve never seen such desperation in my life.”
Surely with those words, we can except a lot of political feelings to come out on this album.
The three artists who blend funk, rock and hip-hop are probably responsible for a large portion of alternative hip-hop as we know it. Though the rumors of a new album really never made it past one-off interviews, the group decided to launch their new album today. Give it a listen below.
