In mid-summer 2016 Major Lazer released the official lyric video for “Cold Water” featuring Justin Bieber and MØ. Diplo and Bieber teased fans on Twitter and Snapchat before finally releasing the song in July. Since then, the video has experienced massive positive feedback while reaching over 217 million views on YouTube in just a few months.
After the song became a summer hit, Major Lazer released a new black-and-white video clip documenting their 2016 European tour with the dancehall track “Cold Water” as the theme song.
For Bieber, this was his largest collaboration in his career. And although he sings in most of the song, he never appears in the song’s actual music video. MØ does make a short appearance in the video in correlation with her appearance on tour during a live performance. However, the video mostly shows clips of the group behind the scenes, live in front of massive crowds, and goofing around backstage.
During the same time that Justin Bieber and Diplo worked together on Jack Ü with Skrillex, MØ had collaborated with Major Lazer on one of their previous singles, “Lean On.” The track which has received 1.6 billion views on YouTube since March of last year was also the largest single on Spotify.
Co-written by Ed Sheeran and Benny Blanco, “Cold Water” is the lead single on Major Lazer’s LP Music is the Weapon, an album set to be released in 2017. Diplo told Rolling Stone about the single saying that the song was “spontaneous” and that they did not think it would work. Before the “Cold Water” debut, Major Lazer’s most recent album, Peace is the Mission, which arrived last year, released the single “Night Riders.” A music video was subsequently released which now has over 9 million views on YouTube.
