Lorde covered Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at her recently Sydney show to celebrate Australia’s legalization of same-sex marriage.
The “Green Light” singer rolled out the impromptu Whitney cover at the Sydney Opera House to praise her Aussie fanbase. “I’m very proud of you,” the singer told the Australian audience while draped in a rainbow flag. “This is the crying show. I don’t know if you know that.”
Visibly tearing up, before asking the crowd to swing their phone torches to her song, Liability, Lorde continued: “This song can be really hard to sing at times … it’s about a time when I felt really alone.”
The audience sang sweetly in solidarity, forming a backdrop of shimmering light.
