There’s no doubt Logic gave the most emotion-stirring performance at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday night. His hit “1-800-273-8255” was written about coping with severe depression and suicide prevention. And it has clearly made a difference.
According to CNN, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline reported a 50% increase in call volume after the awards show.
Lifeline director John Draper told the news outlet they’ve seen a 30% increase overall, revealing that the day Def Jam released Logic’s single “1-800-273-8255” they had “the second-highest call volume in the history of our service.”
“Logic’s performance of ‘1-800-273-8255’ on the MTV VMAs (on Sunday) delivered a positive message that has had and will continue to have a lasting impact on people’s lives,” Draper continued.
The 27-year-old rapper appeared on stage at the VMAs with Khalid and Alessia Cara, alongside suicide attempt survivors donning shirts emblazoned with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s phone number and the hopeful message, “you are not alone.”
Earlier this month, Logic released the official music video for “1-800-273-8255.” The nearly seven-minute video follows a emotional young male through his daily struggles as he comes to grips with his sexuality. Since its release on Aug. 17, the video has gained more than 17 million views.
