Released in June to coincide with Pride month, Disclosure is executive produced by the Orange Is the New Black star, who also speaks about her own experiences as a trans person in film industry. By examining such movies and television shows as Dog Day Afternoon, Boys Don’t Cry, The L-Word, Pose the documentary dives into a range of transgender portrayals, from dehumanizing performances to funny, heartfelt, and accurate representations.
According to the film’s official website “Disclosure is an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender.” They chose to release the film now because “We are at a crossroads as social movements are in direct conversation with Hollywood. Disclosure is the manifestation of this moment for transgender people and their representation. The increasing visibility of transgender people is exhilarating, and signals the beginnings of positive social change.” Watch the trailer of the movie, that is now available on Netflix.
