After teasing the song via their respective Instagram profiles last week, Kygo and Selena Gomez have officially released their collaboration “It Ain’t Me”.
The time between their social media posts, the official announcement on Tuesday and finally the release today was very short, but the two did not need to hype the song very much as it does speak for itself.
The song itself, which starts off with a solo guitar and leads into Selena’s voice singing of her and a past love exploring the streets of New York City, tells the story of an ex-lover who she will no longer put up with.
With lyrics like “Who’s going to rock you when the sun won’t let you sleep?” and “Who’s waking up to drive you home when you’re drunk and all alone… it ain’t me,” it’s obviously a somber tune, but Kygo’s production keeps it from being a complete downer with his signature snaps and bright guitar plucks which lend a happier shade to the sad lyrics.
Though neither Selena nor Kygo have clarified who this song is about, many speculators are pointing fingers to the pop singer’s past relationship with Justin Bieber as she sings in the song, “Somewhere along the lines/We stopped seeing eye to eye”.
This song could not have come at a better time, as The Weeknd just released a monster of a track that makes obvious references to Justin Bieber who has been throwing shade at the Starboy since January.
“It Ain’t Me” is a real hot track with lots of star power behind it and is all but assured to become the 25-year-old producer’s biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit to date (surpassing 2015’s “Firestone,” which peaked at No. 92).
