While Apple‘s AirPods may be the hottest selling earbuds or headphones in the audio business, claiming 45% of the market share, knockoffs are very easy to find.
With the price of AirPods ranging from $159 to $249 for the Pro models, the significantly reduced price of the knockoff are tempting for buyers though it appears that the cheaper imitations are not in the best interest of consumers. The publication 60 Millions de Consommateurs (60 Million Consumers) decided to put the fake AirPods to the test by ordering seven different pairs of knockoffs and only four actually arrived to their office. And of those, only three of the four pairs worked.
Most alarmingly, however, was that the sound quality of the fake pairs proved “mediocre” and in one instance, exceeded safety standards by 10 decibels. Proof positive that all that glitters is not gold.
