After stirring the press with his comments in support of Donald Trump, Kanye West has further stirred the pot claiming that slavery was a choice.

This statement was made during an interview with TMZ yesterday: “When you hear about slavery for 400 years… for 400 years? That sounds like a choice.” He went on to say “We’re mentally imprisoned.” He also referred to Trump as “my boy” and claimed the president was “one of rap’s favorite people.”

When challenged on the statements, the rapper said, “My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved.” A member of the staff, Van Lathan, said he believed West had an “absence of thought” which you can watch below.

After receiving backlash from all fronts, West took to Twitter to clarify himself, comparing his struggle with the media to Willie Lynch, a slave owner who was said to have delivered a speech about controlling black slaves by turning them against one another (historians have doubted whether the speech was ever made).
