In a total surprise that felt all too-fitting, Justin Timberlake performed a duet with the deceased Prince at the Super Bowl halftime show. The two performed “I Would Die 4 U” in the “Purple Rain” singer’s hometown.
Before launching into the touching tribute which was reminiscent of Prince’s own halftime show at Super Bowl 41, Timberlake shouted out to the crowd and the whole city, “Minneapolis, Minnesota, this one’s for you.”

“I just felt like I wanted to do something for this city and something for him that would just be the ultimate homage to what I consider the GOAT of musicians,” Timberlake told Jimmy Fallon on a live Tonight Show from Minneapolis after the game.
As for how the projection of Prince came to be, Timberlake said he used the original recording of the song paired with the footage from Prince’s film Purple Rain. You can watch the whole halftime show here.
