Premiering this December, the multi-talented Jennifer Hudson will portray the iconic Aretha Franklin in the soul singer’s bio-pic, Respect.

Named after one of the Queen of Soul’s biggest singles, the film features the likes of Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, and others as it chronicles the Detroit singer’s life from childhood through the 1960s, canvassing Franklin’s career highs, artistic innovations, and interpersonal drama within a wider social context.

The film’s trailer debuted last night (June 28th) during the 20th annual BET Awards, following Hudson’s performance of Aretha’s “Young, Gifted & Black.” In an emerald green gown, Hudson introduced the song as she sat behind a white piano before moving singing in a stand up microphone. for Rounding out the striking performance, black back-up singers wore white outfits as they surrounded the former American Idol contestant.
