Janelle Monáe and Cyndi Lauper will be honored at Billboard‘s 13th annual Women in Music event on December 6th in New York City, with Monáe accepting the trailblazer award, while Lauper will receive the icon trophy.

“The entire world recognizes the power of Cyndi Lauper’s pop music, and just as crucially, she has used her undeniable talent to soar beyond music, create positive change in modern society and become a true Icon,” Billboard’s editorial director Jason Lipshutz said. Lauper has delivered endless classics in her four-decade career, including eight top 10 hits on the Hot 100 chart.

Monáe follows Lauper’s path as the trailblazer award is conferred to a female artist who acts as a music industry pioneer by using her platform to spotlight unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers. Over the past decade, Monáe has worked to redefine how a black woman is, both, perceived and represented in today’s pop culture by using Aftrofuturism to demonstrate endless creativity.

As previously announced, Ariana Grande will be honored as 2018’s Woman of the Year at the same event.
