As the world continues to adjust to corona virus-related restrictions, the 2020 edition of the BMI Pop Awards was held virtually.
Khalid and Post Malone went head-to-head by co-wrote four of BMI’s top-performed songs of 2019 – in each case, three tracks in which they were the lead (or co-lead) artist along with one as the featured artist. The 22-year-old scored with “Better,” “Talk,” “Eastside” and Ed Sheeran’s “Beautiful People.” while Post Malone came in with “Wow,” “Goodbyes,” “Sunflower” and the massive melding of minds that was Tiësto & Dzeko’s “Jackie Chan,” on which he was featured, along with Preme.
walking away with the ultimate prize was Halsey, who was awarded song of the year for “Without Me” at the 68th annual ceremony. The single reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the New Jersey native’s first top charter as a lead artist.
“We’re so proud to recognize BMI’s incomparable family of pop songwriters and music publishers whose talent, originality and creativity helped inspire many of the most popular songs of the past year,” said Barbara Cane, BMI’s VP worldwide creative. “With unique artistry and fearless authenticity, their music has the ability to inspire, uplift and empower us to drive the positive change that is so needed right now. We thank our community of music creators for sharing their gift of songwriting, and we look forward to celebrating with everyone in person at next year’s ceremony.” Listen to some of the most stand-out tracks from the event here.
