International Day of the Girl is a global day of observance declared by the United Nations that supports increased opportunities for girls and woman and increased worldwide awareness of gender inequality faced by the female sex.

Along with the events that took place during and after the 2018 Grammy Awards with president/CEO Neil Portnow responding to criticism by telling female artists in particular to “step up,” measures have been put in place to remedy the perceived inequality within the award conferring process.

In May, the Recording Academy established a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, which later invited 900 women and people of color under age 39 to join the roughly 13,000 current voting members for the 2019 show. In June, it announced an expansion of the Big Four categories – record of the year, album of the year, song of the year and best new artist – from five ­nominee slots to eight in order to shine more light on minority or under-represented artists.
