Eminem‘s performance of “Lose Yourself” during Sunday night’s Oscars caught everyone off guard, and what happened next also wasn’t expected.
Originally featured in the 2002 film 8 Mile, the Interscope-released song recognized a massive uptick in sales and streams due to renewed interest in the 18-year-old production. According to initial reports to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, “Lose Yourself” saw a whopping 1,894% increase in sales between February 8th and 9th. Over the same period of time, Eminem’s whole catalog enjoyed a 307% overall increase.
This particular recording’s ties to the award ceremony run deep, as it won the 2002 Academy Award for best original song at the March 23, 2003 Oscars. Eminem was not present at the event, making his recent tweet very powerful:
