The moment Beyoncé fans have been waiting for has finally arrived as the 24-time Grammy Award-winning superstar has dropped her highly anticipated visual album Black Is King, inspired by The Lion King, courtesy of Disney+.
The Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia Records-released production, based on the singer’s soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift (in conjunction with the 2019 remake of the iconic film,) puts a new spin on the lessons from the movie for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns,” Disney+ said in a release, and is a “celebratory memoir for the world on the black experience.” In her own words, the Texas native took to Instagram and explained, “I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books.”
The outstanding diverse nature of the project comes by way of contributors Jay-Z, former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, Lupita Nyong’o, Tina Knowles-Lawson as well as the film’s locations including New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London and Belgium.
