After accepting last night’s BET Humanitarian Award, presented virtually by her friend and former first lady, Michelle Obama, Beyoncé unveil her next project … the visual album, Black Is King.
Aimed at celebrating black excellence and culture, according to the press release the effort will premiere globally on Disney+ on July 31st, Black Is King is based on the music from The Lion King: The Gift, the Beyoncé-curated soundtrack album from last year’s animated Lion King remake. Accompanying the music is a film that will feature the album’s superstar artist and special guest appearances.
According to a joint statement from Disney and Beyoncé’s company, Parkwood Entertainment, “The visual album from Beyoncé reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns”. The offering “honors the voyages of Black families throughout time, and tells the story of a young king’s journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. Guided by his ancestors, father and childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his “home and throne.”
