The star-studded took place at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Hosted by Katy Perry, the event featured a collection of performances from the likes of P!nk, Fifth Harmony, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus and more.
The evening’s big winner was obviously Kendrick Lamar, who was nominated for 8 awards and went home with 6 Moon Persons, opened the show with a medley of “DNA” and “Humble.” The 30-year-old rapper brought out some advanced pyrotechnics, performing one of the biggest and boldest sets during the show.
He was followed almost immediately by Ed Sheeran who crooned his song of the summer contender “Shape Of You” with the accompaniment of a full band and switched things up by bringing out Lil Uzi Vert to add a verse to his chart topping song.
Alessia Cara took the stage twice to perform her inspiring single “Scars to Your Beautiful” and then again alongside Logic and Khalid for a stirring rendition of their powerful PSA to suicide. “1-800-273-8255.”
Fifth Harmony referenced the departure of fifth member Camila Cabello during their performance. Demi Lovato traveled to Las Vegas to perform her unapologetic “Sorry Not Sorry” poolside. And Lorde who came down with the flu and lost her voice danced across the stage to “Homemade Dynamite.”
Miley Cyrus meanwhile channelled the 50’s for her performance of “Younger Now,” delivering strong vocals while recreating the Elvis-themed video. DNCE teamed with Rod Stewart for “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
Video Vanguard Award recipient P!nk performed a quick medley of her biggest singles and brought her vert cute daughter along. The evening came to a close after Katy Perry‘s “Swish Swish” performance with Nicki Minaj playing the ref.
